Great workbook for teaching kids ESL

I bought 3 different workbooks to use with ESL kids ages 10-14 and this is by far my favorite. It has tons of pictures and is especially easy to use interactively. What's more, sometimes it can be hilarious! I don't know if the humor is intentional but lots of times I find myself cracking up in front of the students at something in the book. Example: There's a picture of two raggedy men sitting on a bench with a makeshift fire and a sign behind them that says CITY PARK. Question: "Are they businessmen?" Answer: "No, they aren't. They're bums!" Laughed a good 3 minutes on that one.

So I don't know about everything being terribly appropriate, but I love this workbook and the kids definitely show more enthusiasm than with the other books. It's very intuitive, fun and interesting. The downside is that it's a tad pricey, actually maybe more than a tad (triple the price of the other workbooks in fact!). Still, if you're looking for something to teach kids basic English, I recommend this workbook as the best option you'll be able to find in Barnes & Nobles or Borders.

This book is a great workbook and a textbook that can be used for the ESL beginners. I learned English from it when I came to the USA. It covers basic tenses, numbers, includes nice stories and dialogues. I would recommend it to everyone!!!

Very helpful

As a novice singer in our community chorale, I was looking for a book that would review the basics (I sang in high school groups long ago) and teach me things to help me keep up with the near professionals in this group. The beginning section was an asset with lessons on breathing, sight reading, techniques for practice and many other valuable subjects. The last 2/3 of the book contains songs that have been around for years that provide opportunities for further practice. I would say this is a good book to use when wanting to review or learn the basics. It was recommended by my voice teacher.

It's a very inspiring read and motivates one to go and build an awesome Netty service on his own

I purchased this book while it was still under development and with no prior knowledge of Netty or Java NIO. The book quickly taught me the core principles and allowed me to build my first Netty application within a day. It's now been over a year that I first read the book, and even though I have been using Netty ever since and also contributed a few patches to the project, I find myself coming back to the book from time to time to read up on topics in more detail.

The last section of the book was contributed by engineers of the world's top internet companies. There they explain how they are building and scaling out their Java services on top of Netty. It's a very inspiring read and motivates one to go and build an awesome Netty service on his own :-).

This book is without a doubt the best resource to learn about Netty. I recommend it to any Java developer interested in building scalable network applications.

More than netty, a pragmatic guide to write efficient networking code in java

Don't let the title fool you, netty in action is an amazing book for anyone who is interested in learning more about writing responsive and scalable networking code in java.

It just so happens that it relies on the amazing framework that netty is. Anyone who ever wrote low level networking code in java would be grateful for netty, and anyone interested in learning netty, than look no further.

And even if you are not planning to write the next big thing in server side in java, learning the client aspect of the framework is something that as a developer you will want to know how to grasp.

The book is really enjoyable to read, with concise examples, and a very good structure that will make you master all the base concepts of the framework. The last two chapters are an amazing addition for readers who want to know, what could they do with their recently acquired knowledge.

A great start for an amazing framework

Gives a much needed introduction to Netty that is missing on the web.
The documentation maintains a consistent pace which although might be a bit slow while reading I'm thankful for when I finally try to implement some of the ideas in practice.
For anyone interested in getting into Netty or using any popular frameworks that utilize Netty this is a necessary book in your compendium.

Ms. Friedrichsen's undergraduate degree is in Engineering from Iowa State University and she has an MBA from Drake University. She worked for a decade at IBM Corporation before becoming a consultant, author, and college professor.

Ms. Elizabeth Eisner Reding has authored numerous books for Delmar and Course Technology on a variety of software programs, including Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Office, and Microsoft Publisher. Living in New Mexico with her husband, Ms. Reding spends her free time grilling, water gardening, road and mountain biking, and collecting Southwestern art.
