Very good and useful!

I am a clinical informatics pharmacist and I bought this book for my students. I will say that it covers, very thoroughly, almost every topic you would want to cover for advanced pharmacy practice experience. VERY pleased with this book. I bought two so my students could use a copy for themselves on their rotations.

From the Author
SYSLOG was birthed on a collaborative writing website, One Million Monkeys Typing, where I added to a story that was told in journal format. I explored a few threads of what the humans might be experiencing before I took a stab at what the AI directing the ship was experiencing.

Having spent a good chunk of my professional career eyeballs deep digging through syslogs looking for the signal in the noise, I know that these logs tell stories ranging from the sublime to the hilarious to the downright terrifying. If you've ever tracked down an elusive bug, found one of your own silly configuration errors, or cleaned up after a system intrusion, you know what I'm talking about.

While the plot was clear in my mind, elevating a logfile to a central character and have it tell a (hopefully) coherent story was a special challenge. I had to invent my own command set, keep track of process IDs, and ponder what an AI would log. My hope is that attuned readers will find the logs realistic�and non-techie people find the syslog portions accessible and understandable.

About the Author
An ex-chemistry major with a degree in political science, Chris stumbled into a computing career and eventually founded an Internet data center services firm, digital.forest. While there, he oversaw the BGP network, system administered every operating system you'd expect to find running websites, and was technical support of last resort for customers. The countless hours he spent grepping logfiles to tease out sendmail ruleset errors, bind typos, and myriad other arcana for the proper operation of the equipment under his charge left him with the reflexive query of, "Have you checked the logs?" to just about any technical question posed to him.

Chris' first short story won accolades from his mother and grade school teacher for his riveting tale about an Amazonian explorer being consumed by an anaconda. His SYSLOG short story series does not include an anaconda, but it is a similar story of exploration and an examination of how the human condition intersects with the technology that carries us simultaneously to wondrous idylls and dangers.

Chris is a Pacific Northwest native that lives in the Seattle area with his family and tropical fish.

Pulled in all the way!

First of all, I had serious doubts about the concept and whether or not it could be done, or if done, done well. There was a point (very early on, thankfully) past which I was hooked and couldn't for the life of me stop reading. You'll know exactly what that point is. It still gives me chills! Not only did Kilbourn succeed, he went well over the top. You'll see what I mean.

SYSLOG I is serious science fiction by a promising new rising star. And I definitely want more, very much more. I was pulled in all the way on this first one and I'll be reading everything Mr. Kilbourn has to offer in the future.

First, full disclosure: as one of the author's pre-publication readers, I found SYSLOG I to be mysterious, intriguing and tantalizing. One gets an archeological sense of sifting through what got left behind after a tragic end. Or is it?

I'm an IT professional, as well as a fan of both Hard and Soft Sci Fi. To me, SYSLOG I was a fast-paced and intelligent read, that promises a twisting, turning, roller coaster of an adventure amongst the stars. I am eagerly looking forward to future installments. AVANTI!

Frighteningly fascinating! Yuval Harrari writes in a straight talk no bs style with crystal clear logic and a examples to back up his theory. I'm not usually one to enjoy history books. However, this is the exception. Harari writes in a way that is interesting, amusing, clear, and concise. The book does an excellent job at reminding you of its point through summary and argumentative writing. It also covers a broad range of thought, ranging from psychological questions, to ethical conundrums, to philosophical puzzles, to scientific evaluation. The book thoroughly addresses it's argument, admits it's limitations, and makes you think. Read it.

Heartening, uplifting wisdom

The book arrived very fast in excllent new condition. So far I'm only 100 or so pages into it but I'm impressed with it. Harari's going down paths I thought I traveled alone, but in much better detail and description. If you think well of our species this is a heartening book to read.

Melville Davisson Post (1869 1930) was a West Virginia author and attorney best known for his stories featuring Uncle Abner, an amateur detective and backwoodsman who solves mysteries and hands out justice in the years before the Civil War. Mysteries great and small

Melville Davisson Post's Uncle Abner stories have an almost mythical quality about them and should have a wider audience than lovers of detective fiction. They take place in the mountains of western Virginia at a time between the American Revolution and the Civil War, a formative era in American history. That--the period and the "frontier" setting--creates the overwhelming sense of a distant and quasi-legendary time and place. In this world of the Appalachian hills, there's Uncle Abner, a man of huge personality who sees life as a contest between God and the devil with providence being the evidence of God's intervention in men's lives.

That might sound off-putting, but it shouldn't be. They are not religious tales. Abner makes his views known, usually in a few words, and the stories never descend into sermonizing, proselytizing, or any other form of churchiness.

The core of these stories is not typically the methodical investigation of a crime. Like any fictional detective, Abner does discovers clue and solve mysteries, but what interests Post is not the process by which the mystery is resolved but the implications of the deed and its consequences--how people cope in a world where good and evil collide. Uncle Abner (the stories are narrated by his nephew who's a young boy at the time of the events described) may be "Master of Mysteries" but ultimately those mysteries are those of life and death, good and evil, justice and injustice, providence and chance.

The result is a collection of great stories, very well written, full of insight, and sometimes quite moving.

Good Story

Georgie and Nina are best friends with one major difference. Georgie has long known she never wants kids and relishes the freedom that life choice brings. Nina on the other hand wants nothing more than to be a mother. Married for several years she and her husband have endured the rollercoaster of IVF with no success and it has taken its toll on their relationship. Deciding that she can't go through the torturous process again Nina and Georgie go out drinking one night and with her inhibitions lowered Nina asks her friend if she will be her surrogate.

Nobody is more surprised than Georgie herself when she reluctantly agrees to do the ultimate favour for her best friend. But as often happens in life things don't go quite as smoothly as planned, leading the two women on a journey that tests their friendship and teaches them surprising things about themselves. Georgie is hard to like at times and I can't say I really grew to enjoy her character. I don't know that she was as fully developed as she could have been, although she was realistic enough.

Although She's Having Her Baby explores the heartbreaking theme of infertility it does so in a way that includes many light hearted and humorous moments. Those who have been through pregnancy will relate to the cravings and unwelcome changes it brings to your body and those who haven't will gain some insight into what it is all about. The description of some of the mothers in the playground is funny but perhaps a little cliched.

All in all this is an enjoyable story with some surprising plot twists that kept it more interesting than the blurb suggests. I will say I enjoyed it more as it went along. The writing is good with an engaging style and the dialogue is natural and authentic for the characters. I also enjoyed the contemporary Australian setting. It is a promising debut for Lauren Sams and will no doubt appeal to those who enjoy an engaging chick lit novel.

funny and heartwarming

Such a fab debut novel, funny and heartwarming. Ms Sam deals with a heart rending topic with a deft, light touch, the dialogue and characters fairly spring to life on the pages. Look forward to reading more from this clever new voice.

Fantastic! I came across this book on Instagram and liked th cover. I downloaded it and tore through it in two nights! Great holiday reading, lots of laugh-out-lod bits. Reminded me a bit of Jennifer Weiner or Rainbow Rowell.
