1910, Guyana. A time of racial tension and poverty. A time where forbidden love must remain a secret.
Winnie Cox lives a privileged life of dances and dresses on her father’s sugar cane plantation. Life is sweet in the kingdom of sugar and Winnie along with her sister Johanna, have neither worries nor responsibilities, they are birds of paradise, protected from the poverty in the world around them.
But everything can change in a heartbeat…
When Winnie falls in love with George Quint, the post-office boy, a ‘darkie’ from the other side, she soon finds herself slipping into a double life. And as she withdraws from her family, she discovers a shocking secret about those whom are closest to her. Now, more than ever, Winnie is determined to prove her love for George, whatever price she must pay and however tragic the consequences might be.

Amazing and Mesmerising
By Renita
Another beautiful, spellbinding story by Sharon Maas that wrapped itself around my heart. Winnie is an absolutely spectacular character, an incredibly likeable heroine. I rooted for her from the beginning of this amazing tale to the end, and cannot wait to read more of her story. So pleased that there are more books to come which will continue her story. Loved George and Yoyo and Auntie Dolly and Uncle Jim. Sharon Maas effortlessly paints for us a picture of the troubled time in the history of British Guyana during which this story is set. A wonderful story, fabulously and evocatively told. I especially loved the epilogue. Beautiful book. One of those I'm sad to have finished, one I will reread.

A wonderful historic read.

A wonderful historical fiction read. There's romance, music, struggle for independence and fighting one's owns surroundings. It's about falling in love blindly and growing into it simultaneously understanding self. Some of the characters face struggles synonymous with many privileged people of the time. They kept a brave, courageous face while internally plunging into darkness while trying to survive and do the right thing in whatever little way they could. A tough time of history to be in, yet awe inspiring to see the hardship people went through with courage and bravery for a better life.

By Danielle Aadsen
Set in the early 1900's British Guyana, this book delves into the world of British colonialism post slavery (but on the brink of revolt against exploitative working conditions not much better than slavery). I really enjoyed the historical context, as there were a few complex themes here: the racial tensions between the ruling white class and the black servants and Indian workers, the class divide and how that showed itself in the city and country life, and the gender divide - where talk of the suffragettes in London was reaching Guyana, where women were meant not to worry about business affairs, albeit poor women didn't have the same luxury for naivety in the regard.
The author does a good job in weaving in the general feeling of growing desperation across all the key players. This is seen for the wealthy Sugar Kings fighting hard to keep fortunes keeping their families afloat with the treat of a war looming that would soon very much change the world as they knew it. This is felt in the increasingly organised fight of the workers to rebel against their exploitative working conditions.
For our narrator, this plays out in the forbidden love story between the white Sugar Princess Winnie Cox and the black entrepreneur revolutionary George Quint. It seems doomed from the start, as Winnie begins her journey from cosseted, spoiled young girl, to a much bravery less naive young woman. Her journey is contrasted with a similar awaking by her mother, portrayed through diary entries.
While Winnie does undergo a transformation throughout the novel, I felt the one detraction in the story was her childish and obsessive declarations of love. While she is only a teenager, and some of this is very accurate to the age, I felt frustrated at the amount of dwelling on this. It made the love story seem very shallow and made me not really want to route for that love. While Winnie's mother started in a similar place, she seemed to grow up a lot faster - and I felt if Winnie had left behind that childish exposition (or grew up more quickly), the novel would have a more mature reach. With it, it felt more geared toward teenage literature.
I am intrigued with what Sharon Mass will do with the sequel - perhaps as Winnie will be older, she will leave behind childish things, and her story can focus on the far richer landscape of that time period.
I was given a free copy of this book by TBC (The Book Club) in exchange for an honest review.
