Il publie ses poemes ("Les Amoureuses" en 1858), puis ses romans ("Le Petit Chose", "Tartarin de Tarascon", "Sapho" ) qui fondent, petit a petit, sa notoriete. Il travaille comme journaliste et secretaire particulier, et rencontre, dans les salons, les grandes figures de son temps, notamment Flaubert, Zola et Edmond de Goncourt, avec qui il noue une relation intime.

Monday Tales (Contes du Lundi)

`Contes du Lundi` (1873) was first translated to English in 1900 under the title `The Monday Tales`. It's a collection of about 42 short stories by French Naturalist Alphonse Daudet (1840-1897). The stories are mostly autobiographical, many about the historical events of the Franco-Prussian War, Siege of Paris and Paris Commune uprising, which Daudet lived through. The book makes most sense with some prior knowledge or interest in French history, Daudet was writing close to the events and assumes a familiarity. However a few of the best stories can still be read generally. Daudet was probably the most famous author in the world between 1877-1882. He has not aged well and is mostly forgotten today, but a few of the stories from this collection still deserve attention, most of them under 10 pages each.

About the Author
Ira Nadel is Professor in the Department of English at the University of British Columbia, Canada. He is the author of Leonard Cohen: A Life in Art (1994), Double Act: A Life of Tom Stoppard (2000), Ezra Pound: A Literary Life (2004), Joyce and His Publishers (2005), The Cambridge Introduction to Ezra Pound (2007), and David Mamet: A Life in the Theatre (2008). Nadel is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a UBC Distinguished University Scholar, and the winner of the 1996 Medal for Canadian Biography. He has also been awarded a Killam Research Prize, Mellon and Dorot Fellowships at the Ransom Humanities Research Center, University of Texas at Austin, and a Beinecke Fellowship at Yale University, USA.

Beginners welcome

This books is pretty good for a beginner who wants to learn the basics. Yes there are many practice pages however if you don't have or don't want to purchase lots of other supplies until you are sure you want to continue exploring lettering then these pages are helpful. The explanations are easy to read and not overly complicated.

Very disappointing...no content...lots of blank pages

I was disappointed in this book. There's very little content and lots and lots and lots of blank practice pages. I practice in my own journals and books. When I buy a lettering book I want lettering ideas and instruction. This is basically a blank book with a few very basic instructions - and I mean a VERY few. If you already own any other lettering books you already have these instructions. There's nothing new at all. Don't waste your money unless your looking for a notebook.

Lickley shows deft handling of relevant quotations and Nicola shows a fine example of resilience and adaptation

– (Disclaimer, after beginning the book, I have successfully made contact with the author.) This is a semi-autobiographical piece tracing the life of Nicola, who is probably largely a pseudonym that allows Lickley to write in the third person. Nicola has a genetic condition, NF2, but is the first in her family to have it. Nicola’s story emerges in juggling time periods, from her basically normal childhood to her current state of deafness, vision impairment, and weakness and balance challenges. Along the way, Lickley shows deft handling of relevant quotations and Nicola shows a fine example of resilience and adaptation. This is not my usual genre, and I was tempted to give this four stars because of MY reaction. In the end, however, the things that bumped it up to five particularly include the handling of Nicola’s emotions and those of the folks in her life, the candor Lickley gives in speaking in a wise way about the reactions of others and Nicola’s response to them, and my deep and abiding suspicion that Lickley’s purpose in writing was not to make Nicola amazing, but to tell her story of change and adaptability straightforwardly with the goal of simply being clear about physical challenges and responses to them. Nevertheless, Nicola is amazing and inspiring. Anyone with physical challenges or with someone in his or her life who has them will appreciate this book.
