It was 1918, in Jerusalem, when the admiring young American scholar and journalist Lowell Thomas first met T.E. Lawrence. He went on to write With Lawrence in Arabia, a book that sparked the Lawrence of Arabia legend and was the basis of the celebrated film. With brilliant narrative verve, Lowell recounts the exploits of the young British agent who managed to weld disparate and warring Arab tribes into a formidable mobile fighting force—a guerilla army that would defeat the Turks in the Arab Revolt, sealing the fate of the Ottoman Empire in the Middle East during World War I. On a canvas whose background is the fierce, inhospitable desert and in whose foreground stride the Emir Feisal, King Hussein I of the Hedjaz, the British General Allenby, and the strange, hypnotic figure of Lawrence himself, Thomas paints a vivid portrait of the “modern knight of Arabia.”

About the Author
Phillip Knightly, the investigative reporter and writer, author of The Secret Lives of Lawrence of Arabia, sets the amazing tale in the context of modern knowledge. There is also the introduction that Thomas himself wrote for a 1962 edition of the book.

The Making of a Legend By a Shameless Showman

David Lean included a journalist, Jackson Bentley, in his epic film "Lawrence of Arabia," an obvious take-off on the great journalist and author Lowell Thomas. In fact, Thomas was with Lawrence in Arabia and used the experience to make a name for himself and to create a legend. Sadly, it is also true, that T.E. Lawrence did not want to be a legend. As a biography of Lawrence or an introduction to the Middle East this volume has suffered a bit over the years..."it's all right," but there are better books on each subject. Still, this is something special, at least for this writer. This was the first book on the Middle East that I read and when combined with Lean's film which I saw about the same time in early 1963 I was hooked. I have studied, taught about and written about the Middle East ever since. Lowell Thomas and David Lean were inspirations for this modest scholar. I had the privilege to spend part of an early evening with Lowell Thomas in 1973, in of all places a press box awaiting a football game at the University of Utah. It was an unexpected and rare treat. Thomas seemed quite moved that he had encouraged the work of a graduate student. He was was quite a man. His greatest talent was to tell stories, and that he did, with some dramatic embellishments. This work on Lawrence is not unfactual, indeed it provides a good deal of fact. It is also quite sympathetic to Islam and the Arabs, as it should be. Lawrence seems larger than life. But in truth there are men like that. Both Lawrence and Thomas were such men and that can be seen in this wonderful book. It reads well, and it educates, even if some of it is the stuff of legend.

Amazing prediction of the morass in Iraq

Lawrence has been severely criticized for his obvious character faults and bizarre behavior both during and after the war. The critics have used these assessments to minimize the value of his activities, which in my opinion only tends to obscure what Lawrence personally experienced and what Lowell Thomas described - namely that the people of the desert were first of all faithful to the clan, next to the tribe, and then only incidently to any larger arab grouping. Despite a common enemy, there was little common purpose. Lawrence's greatest challenges were securing cooperation between the various tribal groups. Much of this thinking still pervades the Middle East. The Iraq situation is just a modern version of Arabia during WW1. Of equal interest and importance are the descriptions of Lawrence's activities in the Middle East prior to the war. He successfully conducted archaeologic explorations (digs) using local resident labor. And he demonstated how he involved them emotionally in achieving group success in that effot. Timeless and priceless example. A book for the ages. Should be required reading in Washington DC.

AUTHOR’S NOTE I was born on April 25, 1923 in Budapest, Hungary. When I was 17, my parents and I immigrated to the United States. On Dec 7, 1941, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and the United States entered World War II. Soon afterwards, I was drafted into the Army. During my initial stay at Ft. Dix, NJ, the Army discovered that I possessed an important asset. I was able to speak fluent Hungarian, German, French, some English and had studied Latin for eight years in school. My language skills made me the perfect candidate to become a member of military intelligence, later the OSS. I was sent to Camp Ritchie, MD (near the current site of Camp David), for intelligence training. After training, my duties included interrogating German prisoners of war and working alone in occupied France to establish an “underground railroad” for the return of US Airmen who were shot down over enemy territory. Once the war was over, I returned to civilian life in the United States. Like so many other returning soldiers, I did not want to talk about my experiences during the war. The memories were too painful and I wanted to forget. About 6 or 7 years ago, I began talking with Rev. Ralph T. Dirksen about my military service. He was the associate pastor of my church. Ralph convinced me that my story needed to be told so the younger generation could learn about the history of - V - the war from me and other surviving soldiers. We began to write a book. I wanted to tell my story, but I also wanted it to be alive to the reader. We decided to make it a fictional account, based entirely on my actual experiences. In the book, Alex Evans plays my character. Writing continued until Rev. Ralph was transferred to another church in New York State. The unfinished book has sat on my shelf for many years. I have decided to complete the book that Ralph and I began. I used the outline Ralph developed to complete my book. I am happy to share it with you, my family and friends, in honor of my 90th Birthday celebration. This is my story, my memories and my gift to you. I hope you enjoy reading it and learning a little more about my history and the history of World War II. Fred

I had the privilege of traveling on an Honor Flight of West Central Florida trip with Fred about 2 years ago and found out that he had written a book about his experiences in WWII as a tribute to his 90th birthday. Fred had an amazing life and career in the military and I am proud and honored to have gotten to know him during his Honor Flight trip to view the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. Fred is a true hero and I am glad his story can be shared. I think this story of his life would make a great movie too!

Inspiring

This is a wonderful, insightful, and an inspiring book with a lot of courage and love from a loving person! This person is very real and has gone through many changes in her life after the death of her husband. So strong and full of courage!
This book should be read by anyone who has grieved. Or even doubted their own capabilities. It is truly inspirational!
I am very happy to have read her story and hope others will also. So many things to think about

Beautiful, emotional, honest...

Kirsten's tale is one of courage through pain and strength to face the future. While it very much a personal telling of her walk through grief and loss, it is also a very, beautiful love story. She writes with humor, self-introspection, and honesty. An excellent, emotional read from start to finish! I felt as if I was walking through the days with her. Highly recommended!
