I intend to buy every book in this series

I enjoyed this book immensely as well (I already own the first book in this series and was extremely pleased with it) --was glad to see the author included a few songs in this one. I find it incredibly interesting and expect others already somewhat well- versed in music theory and interested in expanding their awareness of different levels of music theory and how music theory can be applied would find it interesting too. These books go further than many theory books and also provide a basis for understanding music theory as it has been accepted or understood during various periods of history, the author refers to these things during his explanations of various sequences or while making suggestions for variations. He refers to dominant or preferential schools of thought through the history of recorded music. As I said with the first one, the author provides a lot of basis for thought and things to reflect upon in these books and a further basis for study/illumination and experimentation. (both for practice and composition). The results are a very concentrated blend of information that while highly specific covers a lot of ground. The author goes into more detail in this book and I immensely look forward to the rest of them. I think what we are seeing here is a very skilled and well-practiced musician who has spent a great deal of time experimenting with music theory himself, offering the rest of us some of his findings and a different way of looking at certain aspects of theory. I give it five stars.

Again great book, lot of info, more detail in these additional ones-- includes some brief demos (short examples/tunes) in this one. Looking forward to the rest of them. Great discussions on sound and theory, interesting clear concise format and lot of variations and expansions. This one has plenty of visual illustrations of the concepts. Great for musicians. Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters provides an anatomical counterpart to Robert Beverly Hale's classic reference book, Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters. Terence Coyle, who for several years assisted Hale at the Art Students League of New York, kept detailed notes of Hale's lectures and teaching methods. He combined these notes with 100 drawings to illustrate how the great masters portrayed specific parts of the human physique. As Hale points out, master artists such as Rembrandt, Leonardo, and Raphael "absorbed the technical details of anatomy so well that these details could be set down instinctively.... If an artist has to occupy his mind with the task of clumsily grouping the elemental facts of anatomy as he draws, there can be little room left for really important matters--such as the spirit of the drawing and the artist's expressive intent." Coyle provides several examples within the study of each anatomical area to illustrate the variety of styles and methods employed by the masters. The book treats, in order, the rib cage, the pelvis and thigh, the knee and lower leg, the foot, the shoulder girdle, the arm, the hand, and the neck and head. A complete series of anatomical reference plates by Dr. Paul Richer is included. It's rare to find good, comprehensive books on drawing the anatomy. Each of these the first, the return of a classic; the second, a focused study; and the third, lessons from the masters deserves a place on library shelves. Bridgman was a legendary teacher at New York's Art Students' League. There, he originated a system of drawing known as "constructive anatomy." In 1952, his seven books on anatomy were gathered into one volume, which became a standard work at art schools and universities. Published now for the first time in paperback, it holds up as an indispensable volume, with more than 200 illustrations of hands and hundreds of images of arms, shoulders, heads, torsos, legs, knees, and feet. Fairley's book concentrates on those troublesome extremities hands and feet. Sketchbook exercises are followed by eight detailed painting demonstrations in watercolor, oil, and other media. Fairley then continues on to portraits in which variations in age, skin tone, composition, mood, and movement are integrated. Advanced students will find Hale and Coyle's Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters a rich source of inspiration. Hale, like Bridgman, was one of the great teachers at the Art Students' League. His student, Coyle, gathered together Hale's famous lectures to produce this compendium. Hale drew on principles found in 100 masterpieces by such artists as Leonardo, Michelangelo, Rubens, Raphael, D?rer, Titian, and Rembrandt. In 1995, Giovanni Civardi's trilogy Drawing Human Anatomy (Sterling, 1995), Drawing the Female Nude (Sterling, 1995), and Drawing the Male Nude (LJ 3/15/96. o.p.) reached a high standard for good, basic books in this genre. These three surpass Civardi's works and are highly recommended for serious artists and comprehensive library collections.

Beautiful but...

Unfortunately this book is a companion book to another book 'Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters'. Had I known this I would have bought the original book. This book is a fine collection of drawings by the Masters and a brief analysis of the anatomy of each. It is a beautiful book, but not really the teaching book I was looking for. The sellers description of the book includes the following inaccurate statement "whose foremost author was one of the great artistic anatomy teachers of the twentieth century". This statement implies that Robert Beverly Hale was the 'foremost author'. He was not. The book was compiled by Terence Coyle, and that fact is clearly stated in the Introduction by Hale.

A Call for a Change in the Foundational Paradigm of Justice

From an early age Stuart Greaves became an observer in the social dynamics prevalent on an international scale. In his book "False Justice - Unveiling the Truth about Social Justice" he provides the basis for a melding of personal faith in Jesus Christ and his own affinity toward social injustice and the socioeconomic disparity across racial lines.

Greaves provides amazing Biblical insights into the plight of the poor, struggling with poverty, hunger, human trafficking, abortion, genocide, and human inequality. He then translates these perceptions into spiritual applications for implementing a Christ centered paradigm of justice.

As I read, I begin to examine my own personal commitment and motivation to explore social justice in light of the Christian principles I champion. I begin to relate the moral responsibility of society to the small acts of kindness we exercise individually. I may never impact legislation, sway social reform, eliminate racism, eradicate poverty, or abolish the political corruption rampant at many levels of government but I was awakened to a need for being spiritually relevant while being socially realistic. I determined to challenge the sophisticated, ethical, pharisaical, religious attitudes prevalent in society today.

The book is divided into two parts: Part I: Introduces the progression of justice, false messengers, the false gospel, and false worship and religion. Part II: Presents A Global Worship Movement for Justice, The Gospel as the true message of justice, The Messiah Jesus, as the just one, a man of war, and a charge for commitment. Greaves' meticulous research is well documented, awe-inspiring resource for further reading and study.

Stuart Greaves' book "False Justice - Unveiling the Truth about Social Justice" provides an impressive Biblical treatise a Clarian call for Change in the Foundational Paradigm of Justice. Highly recommended.

Great Book

Read this book. In a world where justice is such a controversial word, Stuart Greaves gives amazing and incredible insight into what is justice. You don't have to be a Christian to read this book... but I would say, if you are a Christian, you MUST read this book. The topic of justice is rarely, if ever, preached and taught on and the church is only learning what the world is telling them about justice. I've never heard justice taught like this book teaches and this book makes something that was complex, in my mind, into something easy to grasp and understand.

I feel in burning inside of my heart for true justice. If you feel the same burning, read this book. It will change your way of thinking and, in turn, change your life.

Much Needed Look On True Justice

There are a lot of thoughts and ideas going around about justice. Social justice has almost become a catch phrase for anyone wanting to appear compassionate.

Within the church, it's nearly requiring believers to leave the truth of the Gospel to prove they have compassion for the poor and the sinner.

In his book, False Justice, Greaves takes a hard look at the kind of false social justice being lauded today as truth and Gospel. He takes us on his own journey to understanding true justice via Jesus the Christ. If you are preparing for the PE exam in civil engineering, the following suggestions may help.

• Find out the current edition of this book. You might be reading this book long after it was published. Newer editions mean that the codes, standards, and regulations on which the exam is based are not represented in the older edition,that the exam body of knowledge has changed, and/or the exam format and policies have changed. Older editions are no longer appropriate for the current exam, and it is not reasonable for you to expect an older edition to serve your needs when it is out of date.
• Become intimately familiar with this book. This means knowing the order of the chapters, the approximate locations of important figures and tables, what appendices are available, and so on.

Essential for the PE exam

If you're reading these reviews undoubtedly you know what this is and why you need this for the Civil PE exam.

That said, as far as I can tell this is pretty much the only comprehensive reference available for the exam so rather than talk more about the CERM itself I wanted to break down some things that helped me use the manual to study and pass the PE exam the first time:

1) Download and print out a copy of the index for the CERM from the PPI website, bind it separately, and use that to look stuff up while studying and taking the exam to avoid constantly flipping around in the manual between the index and the chapters. Saves lots of time and aggravation working from multiple places in the CERM. I learned this from people in my review class and never would've thought of this on my own which is why I wanted to share it here.

2) For the most used equations, write the constants and such in the margins next to the equations. Highlight the equations to make them pop from the columns of text in the book. This did a few things for me: familiarize me again with the equations and constants, help me remember how to use the equations, and also save me time looking for constants in the back or whatever. I did this the month before my review class started, helped me find what's in the manual too before I got into the heavy duty working of problems during my review class for hours on end.

3) Tab everything possible. The exam is all about speed (~5 min/question...) so make sure you can find what you need real fast. I used a combination of heavy duty tabs with paper inserts and the sticky flags. I color coded the tabs by topic and tabbed my manual as follows: tabs across the top for tables of data (e.g. water demands per capita per day, wastewater production per capita per day, etc), tabs down the sides for specific topics/equations (e.g. shallow foundations, water hammer, that CM workflow diagram whose name escapes me right now, etc), tabs across the bottom for the reference tables in the back (e.g. head losses for specific fittings, moments of inertia for generic shapes, the Ten State's regs, etc).

Seemed to work real well, I probably had a few too many flags/tabs but I only needed to use the index to find something a few times during the exam so I guess I did okay there. I left all my tabs and flags in the CERM after finding out I passed since it makes the book look real salty and reminds me of the pain I went through studying and taking the exam.

Bottom line here: Know what's in the book and where to find it. The morning exam was pretty much straight out of the CERM and my review class, quite literally 95% of the questions were pure muscle memory from using the CERM to study. The PM exam was the similar but about 25% of the questions couldn't be answered out of the CERM and needed an outside reference (master's level stuff in my opinion and I don't have an MSCE so I just did what I could and guessed the rest).

4) Use the CERM as much as possible while studying. I know this sounds obvious but I first attempted studying with stacks of textbooks from engineering school in addition to my CERM and quickly realized it would never work. You need to become as familiar as possible with the CERM if you want a ghost of a chance of passing, and you'll be amazed what's in there if you look. Also, you will not have time to flip around between 20 books during the exam so just get used to using the CERM as much as possible while studying. Heck, sleep with your CERM if you have to and take it with you to lunch. Remember, there are many CERMs but this one is mine, without my CERM I am nothing, without me my CERM is a monitor stand.

For the exam, I only brought in my trusty marked up and tabbed CERM, my open channel hydraulics book, and my (undergrad) geotech book along with my notes and sample problems from my review class. I spent probably 80% of my time in the exam using the CERM, my other references were nearly useless save for some rando oddball questions I was able to find during my spare time to get some extra points. The CERM and a few other things were enough to get me through the WR exam and I am neither a water resources engineer by practice nor the kid from Good Will Hunting.

5) Take a review class if at all possible. I was fortunate to find one an hour away on Saturdays. It helped me get into the mode of studying a lot (I kept records and including 56 hours of class I spent about 250 hours preparing for the exam over about 3.5 months, did nothing the two weeks before the test due to burnout and a work trip during which I was not going to study in the hotel at night), helped me realize I wasn't the only one fighting my way through the pain and misery, and helped me learn enough to get by in areas that I had little to no college coursework on (e.g. transpo, econ, etc). The review was kinda costly but I figure I got off cheap passing the PE the first time.

I highly recommend buying a separate construction study guide

I gave it three stars because I took the Construction Depth exam, and this reference has very little construction information. I highly recommend buying a separate construction study guide. However, this reference was quite useful to me during the morning exam for the non-construction problems.

HUGE reference, and it has way more information than you would need for any PE exam. I do not recommend using this as a study guide (except for the example problems), just a pure reference like the design standards. Once you narrow down the sections specific to your exam, the material is very useful. Some of the problems were representative of the exam, and others were so complex, they could never be solved in the average 6 minutes per problem (at least not by me). It is good to work those more complex problems for your depth area, so you have a better understanding of the topic. For the exam though, you might have to do two or three steps of those really complex problems.

WHY WOULD I BUY THIS BOOK!?!?

Hold on a second . . . I'm confused why anyone is even buying this book other than just wanting to expand their personal library!

First off, from the 13th edition to the 14th edition the only code that updated is the AASHTO that went from 2010 to 2012. All the others (ACI 318, ACI 530, AISC, ASCE 7, IBC, and NDS) stayed the exact same as the 13th edition! AND even though the AASHTO code was updated it is STILL out of date of the current NCEES PE Exam tested material. Here's a link to NCEES design codes tested for the Civil/Structural:

The Essential Bibliography

Given the industry of Hitchcock film criticism, this standard reference work is inevitably outdated from the moment of its publication and subsequent editions. Nevertheless, for older articles, essay, and books it is indispensable. Sloan includes very full synopses, with only few factual errors, of every film, from the most obscure to the most famous. Highly recommended--all the more if you can secure a high quality, secondhand edition.

This is a very nice book and has a lot of info on his movies. Unfortunately, I was looking for more information on his TV work, and that has much less coverage. It is a good book and has a lot of information. I'm sure it will be in my library for a long time.
