About the Author
John M. Yumoto is perhaps the foremost authority on the samurai sword outside of Japan. A native of California, he began his study of Japanese swrodcraft during his early childhood in Japan. While in Japan he studied under a number of masters from different schools and learned the art of sword polishing and of identification and evaluation. He has held membership in a number of sword clubs and at present is an active member of the Japan Society for the Preservation of the Samurai Sword and the Northern California Sword Club. He has also been requested to serve as advisor to the Japanese Sword Society of the United States, presently being organized.

Somewhat dry in presentation...

This is a fairly serious overview of Samurai swords intended for someone who is interested in collecting them (or perhaps has inherited one). That is, this is quite a 'theoretical' book intended to convey, in a quite concise manner, the myriad of details needed to identify Samurai swords.
The book goes through a very brief overview of Japan's sword history including some very rough information on the swords produced in various time periods. Mixed in here is a tiny amount of non-technical information in the form of some tales of how the special clay-coating heat-treating process was invented.
The book then presents detailed information on such subjects as blade curvature, temper lines, tip profile, tang markings and finishing. This section has a number of line drawings that do help convey the information in a clear and simple manner.
This leads into a very in-depth section with the Japanese characters that could be found on a sword tang. This section is quite long and, considering the book's purpose, not really very useful to the majority of people. That is, without understanding Japanese you really aren't likely to be able to use this section - it would be much better to consult with someone who does understand Japanese.
I really had hoped for more of an overview of the history with some details on the more famous crafters. There is also very little information on the manufacturing process other than some very cursory paragraphs and drawings. I agree that this subject deserves many books but I also think that since it is not really highlighted in this volume, a beginner will have no real reason to understand WHY certain eras and smiths were regarded so highly. That is, without more background on the process one is left asking the question "what is wrong with a stainless-steel blade?".
One for the serious collector but you will definitely need other books on the subject to really get an appreciation of the remarkable nature of the Samurai sword.

The "Definitive" guide to the Samurai Sword

I was once told "If you are interested in buying a real samurai sword buy this book read it once and then read it again and again." There is probably no other book, in english, that has as much info on antique samurai blades as this book. A must for anyone interested in sword collecting or even a serious martial artist.

If you own ONE book....

This book is exactly what you need to understand the factors that determine rarity and value. It contains a comprehensive delineation of the varieties of each sword part, maker dates and places, and a good dose of relevant history to the development and use of the sword.
This is not the ONLY book you need - but it should be the first.
This small investment can literally save you thousands in mistaken purchases...you will quickly see why you should save your money, i.e. don't buy several $400 swords from Ebay, and rather purchase the "special" (albeit expensive) blade.
There are too many hoaxers out there, and you need to visualize your purpose. Do you want a fragile 15th century relic? A modern (and very pricey) blade of Iaido practice? A WWII (and prior) collectible? What's the difference?
Why be able to read the maker's mark? What difference doe it make? Do you want the master's blade, the student's blade or the machine made? Better find out the difference before you invest.
Would you buy coins without a Redbook? Stamps without a Scotts'?

About the Author
Peter Schoenaerts studied Literature and Linguistics (Dutch and English) at the University of Louvain and trained as an actor at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. He co-authored several language manuals and other publications (a.o. Vanzelfsprekend, Niet Vanzelfsprekend, Go Dutch!, Thematische Woordenschat Nederlands voor Anderstaligen, Het Grote Puzzel- en Doeboek voor Anderstaligen). From 2005 till the end of 2008 he taught Dutch at one of the largest Dutch Language and Culture schools: 't Klokhuis (in New Jersey and New York). He currently works for the Taaluniecentrum Dutch as a Foreign Language in Brussels. He is also an actor and director.

Dutch Learners - An easy reading play

"Meer is altijd beter" is a learning play that helps fill the hole of intermediate language learning after you finish beginning Dutch courses like Rosetta Stone levels 1-3. This play introduces the top one thousand words and by their context in the play dialog, the meanings of the new vocabulary is fairly easy to decipher. It is fun reading, you'll chuckle at least a couple times during your reading. There is a nice intro on how to best use the play and good follow-on exercises in the back. The book is fine for individual study, but really set up for classroom use. That would be fun! Not for beginning students, but an excellent resource for us "advanced beginners or intermediates". What the "Le Petit Prince" did for french students, this play does for dutch learners.

This book was a cute read to me and I really enjoyed reading it. The author did a great job of pulling us readers into the book and forming a connection with the characters. You can't help but love Cece because she was a honest character with her feelings as a teen (adult not so much) and that is something that made this book enjoyable. Nate (Neil) as a teenager was a great dude and I loved his and Cece's friendship and how he was able to see her for her and not the pretense that she puts up or the front she puts up. I also loved the dynamic of Mike, Cece, and Nate/Neil's friendship and Mike being the glue and how this friendship lasted through the years and remained genuine and true. Now my issues with this book was the fact that Nate/Neil being a country singer came out of no where. I say this because in the teenage years as long as we've "known" Nate/Neil, there was not ONE mention of him being able to sing or even interested in music. The book talked about him being the grandson of a country legend but NOTHING of him singing, this whole book pre super stardom we've "known" him as football superstar. So him becoming this country rock star as an adult was a surprise to me even though I read the synopsis and know that Nate is a singer, but once you start reading the book you forget the synopsis saying anything about him being a singer because we're so engrossed with him being a football star. Also, another issue was the whole Cece and teacher incident and the progression of that throughout the years and the fact that Cece NEVER even as an adult saw anything wrong with the fact that her teacher was pursuing/had a relationship with a minor/student (her). But other than that the book again was good in my overall opinon it's worth the purchase based off of the teenaged years but once they are adults not so much.

I have read and enjoyed books by Carina Adams before, but I can honestly say that Forever Red is my absolute favorite by her. I could not put this book down! It has several of my favorite tropes, and it all added up to one fantastic story. This friends to lovers story was also a second chance romance, and Nate and Lia were fantastic together. I know that I will absolutely be reading more from Carina Adams in the future, especially after this book.

Nathaniel Kelly is a successful country star but no matter how much he has, he has never been able to forget the girl that broke his heart. He had loved and lost Cecelia when they were kids, and he never expected to see her again. Nate spent years trying to find her, but he never had any luck until he does a show close to home. Nate is surprised to find her there with her friends, but he figures that it is time to finally get some answers. Cecelia had her reasons for doing what she did, knowing that she could never live with herself if she let Nate give up his life to stay with her. That has never stopped her from loving him or wishing that things had been different though. When they are suddenly thrown back together, they realize that the connection they once shared is as strong as ever. But can Nate and Lia have a chance together after all their years apart and all the obstacles that now stand in their way?

I cannot even begin to describe how much I loved these characters. Nate was so sweet and he really made me fall in love with him right along with Lia. He was such a good guy, and my heart absolutely broke for him when things ended for them as kids. Nate would have done anything for her, and it was clear that it was more for them than just a childhood kind of love. Their connection was deep and their feelings true. Lia had not had the easiest life, and I understood why she made the decisions she did even if I didn't like them. She was doing what she thought she needed to, and I was so upset for her because she broke her own heart right along with Nate's. These two were meant to be together, and that was clear to me right away. Their connection was so strong that it couldn't be broken, even with years and secrets between them.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story. It was so good, and I was instantly drawn in. I was so captivated by this story that I read it pretty much in one sitting. I found the world falling away as I became more invested in Nate and Lia's story. I loved that Carina Adams gave us both the past and present, and also Nate and Lia's POVs. I felt like it really allowed the reader to get a feel for exactly what each character was going through, and it gave this story a depth that is often missing when a story is told from only one POV. I really enjoyed being inside these character's heads and seeing how they were experiencing everything that happened. I would definitely recommend this book to those looking for a solid romance story with all the feels. This book was exactly what I needed, and I know that Nate and Lia will be characters I want to go back and visit again. I cannot wait to read more from Carina Adams in the future.

I am such a sucker for friends to lovers and second chance love stories. And what is great about Forever Red is that is gives us both. I loved Lia and Neil’s story and loved going on this journey with them. Their story is about love, heartbreak, forgiveness, second chances and so much more. Carina Adams did such an amazing job with this story. It is one of those books that you just cannot put down because you need to know what happens. You will fall in love with these characters and be rooting for them every step of the way. This is one of my favorite reads of this year.

We meet Lia in present day when she finds out that her friends have surprised her for her birthday, with a trip to see Nate Kelly in concert and to meet him backstage. What her friends don’t know is that Neil Kelly, the hot, sexy tattooed country star, has had Lia’s heart since she was sixteen. Twelve years ago she left, leaving behind a boy with a shattered heart.

After reading the prologue you are left wondering what happened between the two main characters. Why they are no longer together what will happen now when they see each other? I was completely sucked in from that very moment. I wanted to know all about their story. How they met, how they fell in love and what happened to cause them to be apart now. It’s been twelve years since Lisa has seen the only bout that she has ever truly loved, but she has followed his career since the day it started. She is not sure how Nate is going to react when he sees her. Will he be pissed, hurt, angry or all three? Hmmmm…..you will have to read this story to find because as I started writing this review I decided that I am not going to give any more of the plot away. You need to experience this book on your own. I will say that it is a beautiful and amazing second chance love story that will capture you from the very start.

There are so many things that I loved about this book and I feel if I list them all this review will never end. I loved that this book was written in two parts, the past and the present. We get to see and experience the good and the bad with Lia and Neil. From the moment they first met in high school to present day when they see each other for the first time in twelve years. The first half of this book gives us Neil and Lia as teenagers. You see just how in love these two are. And while you may say what does a sixteen year old really know about love, well let me tell you they had a love like no other. It is that once in a lifetime love, the one that you know will last forever, no matter how many miles or years apart. It’s the type of love that you get goose bumps just thinking about. Lia was Neil’s heart, his everything. And no matter how many struggles they faced he loved her and would do anything for her.

The second part of this book is the present. I thought I had this all figured out. That I knew exactly what the reactions would be when they finally saw each other after all these years. But I was so wrong. I loved exactly how this one played out and how it all happened in an unexpected way. It wasn’t predictable in any way and that’s what I loved. The best part is that we still get to see and feel that connection that these two always had, a connection that even twelve years apart could not break. No matter how hurt and how angry Neil may have been, one thing never changed. And that was his love for Lia. He may have has some battles with his brain and his heart along the way. But in the end I think his heart won.

Now we need to talk about Neil/Nate Kelly because my god did I love him. He had me from the start. Neil as a teenager was the guy that every girl in high school dreamed of. He was the hot football star but he was sweet and caring and a respectable guy. He was completely swoon worthy and I fell in love with him from the moment I met him. He is that guy that will capture your heart from the very beginning and never give it back. But twelve years later we see Neil as Nate Kelly, the hot, sexy and tattooed country with a voice that will melt your heart and quite possibly your panties. He is everything that you want and love in a guy and he quickly became one of my favorite book boyfriends. He is just perfect!!

I loved Lia’s character so much. I may not have liked the decisions that she made over the years but she always made them with the best of intentions. And I completely understood why she made them. What she did, she did out of love and I admired her for that. She was such a great heroine. She came from a world that was completely different than Neil's but she still held her head high and found a way to make something of herself. I wanted Lia and Nate to find their way back to each other. They were just meant to be. And I was rooting for them all the way.

This book was just fantastic. As the reader you felt it all right along with this couple. I always love a book where you can feel the connection with the two characters. You can feel how deeply they are in love. When they hurt, you hurt. When they are happy you are right there along with them smiling and laughing. I felt every emotion with this book and that has everything to do with the words written on each page. Ms. Adams created two characters that were so real and just so lovable. She made me feel like I was a part of their life and experiencing their journey with them. I honestly cannot express how much I lvdd this book. But it wasn’t just Lia and Neil that I loved. Their best friend Mike had such a big part in this story and I loved him. He was just the sweetest and best friend a boy or girl could have. I fell in love with these characters and was sad when it was all over. Oh and the epilogue I did not see that one coming at all. But I loved it and loved how it sets up the next book. A truly beautiful and epic love story. Fantastic job by Ms. Adams. Once again you blew me away and gave me one more book boyfriend to add to the top of my list. And yes I may just love Neil more than Matty...maybe. :)

In a nutshell, what is effective altruism and how does it differ from ordinary charitable giving?

Effective altruism is both an emerging movement and the set of ideas behind that movement. The basic idea is that to live a fully ethical life, we should seek to do the most good we can. To discover what will do the most good, we need to use reason and evidence. In contrast, two-thirds of donors to charity do no research at all into the organizations to which they donate—they are moved by images that play on their emotions, but give no indication whether the organization is effective at what it claims to be doing.

Aren’t we all, at the core, self-interested?

The book introduces readers to many of the men and women who are practicing effective altruism. What they are doing will startle many readers—choosing their careers so that they can donate more, and donating half their incomes to effective charities. Yet typically they don’t think of themselves as making a sacrifice. They find their lives more rewarding than they were before they made these choices. So it may not be a question of denying self-interest, but of a different understanding of what really is in one’s own interests.
Can effective altruism change the world?

I find the stories I tell in this book immensely encouraging. There are not many effective altruists yet, but they are already changing the world, and their impact is growing.

He is the author of more than twenty books including Animal Liberation, Practical Ethics, and The Life You Can Save. He divides his time between New York City and Melbourne, Australia.

An excellent introduction

Disclosure: I give about 15% of my income to some of the charities discussed in this book, and I plan to give that much or more for the foreseeable future. I read The Most Good You Can Do as a committed effective altruist.

Even if I hadn't, though, I think I'd have found this book compelling. The first ten or so chapters are uniformly excellent: My favorite pages were those telling the stories of dozens of people (from tech CEOs to low-income graduate students) who live extraordinarily generous lives. Singer also gives a more fluid introduction to the concepts behind effective altruism than you'd find by just reading blog posts or newspaper articles written by a variety of authors. He uses very little technical philosophy and a lot of plain language -- I finished the book in a couple of hours, and enjoyed every minute.

Why only four stars? Near the end of the book, Singer begins to explore some of the in-depth causes that certain effective altruists support. These chapters were interesting to me, but they're also filled with numbers and speculative calculation and feel "colder" than the rest of the book -- they won't appeal to everyone. Still, this is an excellent book overall, and I'd recommend it to effective altruists and non-EAs alike.

Challenges us to think deeply about our impact

Whether you're completely new to Peter Singer or are very familiar with his work, The Most Good You Can Do is highly informative and thought-provoking. The book builds on his previous work, but offers many profiles of people living out the values of effective altruism and explores practical and psychological issues around how we can do the most good in the world, in addition to the philosophical issues, making this book easily readable.
Importantly, he shows that doing good things for the world altruistically is perfectly compatible with making yourself happy -- in fact, it's complementary. Some takeaways you can expect to get from this book are:
- explanation of what effective altruism is, and the growth of the movement
- real examples of ordinary people who have used the principles of effective altruism to accomplish extraordinary good
- how to balance your own interests and needs against the moral duty to relieve suffering in the world
- altruistic strategy on finding a career that maximizes social impact
- altruistic strategy on choosing causes and charities to support
- balancing between causes with concrete, predictable outcomes (e.g. preventing malaria) and those with highly uncertain but potentially very high benefits (such as political advocacy)
If you want to be challenged to think deeply about how you can best use your skills, time, or money to improve the world, this book will help you do that.

Nice message, but disorganized and not enough good content to warrant the 18$ pricetag

I think Peter Singer is a great guy, based on his philosophies, and I also think the message in this book is a good one. I believe that we should all be trying to reduce the suffering in the world by being vegan and donating to charities.

That being said, I don't believe a book was the best medium for this. It is really short for the price you pay, and it seems to repeat itself over and over again. Basically, "Hey, you should donate to charity. Look at these 234982304 people who donate to charity. This is how they donate to charity." Then at the end of the book there are a few more essays that are tangentially related.

Ultimately, the book, to me, comes off as disorganized and far too simply written for the ~18$ price tag.

The basic message, which I said above in quotes, could have been eloquently written into a journal/newspaper article or a speech (which I believe he already did via TED). There just isn't enough content, especially non-fluff content (e.g. a million unnecessary mini biographies of people who donate money), to warrant a book, let alone an 18$ book.

I like Peter Singer, but I would save your money and not purchase this. It seems as if Singer just wants to milk this (good, but small) message for as much as he can. I would have returned it but I wrote on one of the pages, so I ended up tossing it after I finished. At least Singer donates a good amount of the money I wasted on this book to charity, if what he says in his book is true!
