Far from the Tree: Parents, Children and the Search for Identity, by Andrew Solomon

A Scribner Classics edition of Andrew Solomon’s bestselling masterpiece, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award, The Dayton Peace Prize, and one of The New York Times Book Review’s Ten Best Books of 2012—“a brave, beautiful book that will expand your humanity” (People).

Andrew Solomon’s startling proposition in Far From the Tree is that being exceptional is at the core of the human condition—that difference is what unites us. He writes about families coping with deafness, dwarfism, Down syndrome, autism, schizophrenia, or multiple severe disabilities; with children who are prodigies, who are conceived in rape, who become criminals, who are transgender. While each of these characteristics is potentially isolating, the experience of difference within families is universal, and Solomon documents triumphs of love over prejudice in every chapter.

All parenting turns on a crucial question: to what extent should parents accept their children for who they are, and to what extent they should help them become their best selves. Drawing on ten years of research and interviews with more than three hundred families, Solomon mines the eloquence of ordinary people facing extreme challenges.

Elegantly reported by a spectacularly original and compassionate thinker, Far From the Tree explores how people who love each other must struggle to accept each other—a theme in every family’s life. The New York Times calls it a “wise and beautiful” volume, that “will shake up your preconceptions and leave you in a better place.”

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, November 2012: Anyone who’s ever said (or heard or thought) the adage “chip off the old block” might burrow into Andrew Solomon’s tome about the ways in which children are different from their parents--and what such differences do to our conventional ideas about family. Ruminative, personal, and reportorial all at once, Solomon--who won a National Book Award for his treatise on depression, The Noonday Demon--begins by describing his own experience as the gay son of heterosexual parents, then goes on to investigate the worlds of deaf children of hearing parents, dwarves born into “normal” families, and so on. His observations and conclusions are complex and not easily summarized, with one exception: The chapter on children of law-abiding parents who become criminals. Solomon rightly points out that this is a very different situation indeed: “to be or produce a schizophrenic...is generally deemed a misfortune,” he writes. “To...produce a criminal is often deemed a failure.” Still, parents must cope with or not, accept or not, the deeds or behaviors or syndromes of their offspring. How they do or do not do that makes for fascinating and disturbing reading. --Sara Nelson

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Solomon, who won the National Book Award for The Noonday Demon (2001), tackles daunting questions involving nature versus nurture, illness versus identity, and how they all affect parenting in his exhaustive but not exhausting exploration of what happens when children bear little resemblance to their parents. He begins by challenging the very concept of human reproduction. We do not reproduce, he asserts, spawning clones. We produce originals. And if we’re really lucky, our offspring will be enough like us or our immediate forebears that we can easily love, nurture, understand, and respect them. But it’s a crapshoot. More often than not, little junior will be born with a long-dormant recessive gene, or she may emerge from the womb with her very own, brand-new identifier—say, deafness, physical deformity, or homosexuality. Years of interviews with families and their unique children culminate in this compassionate compendium. Solomon focuses on the creative and often desperate ways in which families manage to tear down prejudices and preconceived fears and reassemble their lives around the life of a child who alters their view of the world. Most succeed. Some don’t. But the truth Solomon writes about here is as poignant as it is implacable, and he leaves us with a reinvented notion of identity and individual value. --Donna Chavez

Thoughtful and well-researched
By Greenbyoo
Far From the Tree is a TOME. I mean, it's a great big, heavy book in every sense of the word. To be honest, I was a little intimidated when my copy arrived! I didn't read it cover to cover, but started with the autism chapter because it was relevant to our family. I found it to be a very well-researched, sensitive look at how autism can affect a parent's life, hopes, and perceptions.

That chapter was so good, I moved to the crime chapter and stayed up way too late because I could not put it down. Thank you, Mr. Solomon for pointing out the absurdities in our justice system when it comes to dealing with juvenile crime. (And as for the reviewer who questioned including crime at all, this book focuses on any possible way that a child can turn out different than their parents expected, and being guilty of a crime definitely seems appropriate to me.) I learned a lot from this chapter, and was particularly fascinated by the Klebolds' story. Once again, Soloman wrote with sensitivity about a very difficult and controversial topic.

From there I read the chapter on dwarfism, and then finally turned to the first pages of the book and started reading the beginning! I wanted to learn about how families deal with a diagnosis of autism; instead I learned about how families deal with all kinds of unexpected outcomes, how resilient parents can be when faced with hardships, and how connected are the identities of parents and their children. As a parent, I understand the constant struggle to balance who we want our children to be and who they actually are. "There is no such thing as reproduction" may be my new mantra.

One more thing: in 700 pages (okay, I admit, I didn't read the Acknowledgments) I never found an example of "martyrdom" that one reviewer complained about. The book relates honest responses from parents in the trenches. Parenting isn't always fun, even for parents of kids who have no extra challenges. But Far From the Tree isn't a chronicle of long-suffering devastated parents; there are plenty of positive, hopeful, make-the-best-of-it moments as well.

It's a fascinating book for anyone interested in parenting, psychology, or the history of disability. Highly recommended.

Disability v. identity
By Stephanie Patterson
I have been disabled all my life. I have cerebral palsy which means that at this point in my life I walk with two canes. Though my parents sought medical attention for me, eventually they embraced my paternal grandmother's Christian Science faith. I have through the years been considered crippled, handicapped, disabled, differently abled and physically challenged. I am who I am both because of and in spite of my parents.
Andrew Solomon's book is wonderful because he is so open to any possibility. He enters so fully into the lives of the people whom he interviews that he helps you understand what their lives are like. All of these families have difficulties but the ones who seem to do best are those who accept (and in some cases) embrace the difference and who say to their children "I love you as you are" and thereby allow their children to accept themselves.(That, alas, sounds like a Hallmark greeting card and Mr. Solomon's book never gets mawkish and his explanations of the difficulties these families face are never facile).
I also loved Mr. Solomon's inclusion of all sorts of differences. He talks about transgendered people, criminals (his interview with Dylan Klebold's mother is very moving) and geniuses. I know a bit more about Joshua Bell's relationship with his mother than I might like, but the chapter was very entertaining.
Mr. Solomon himself is part of this tapestry. He discusses his mother's wish to correct his homosexuality much as she fixed his dyslexia and the teasing he underwent because of he was more interested in opera plots than football plays. As an adult he has married and talks about the feelings he had as he contemplated the possibility of having to raise a disabled child (the child is not disabled and Mr Solomon confesses his relief)
Many the families to whom Mr. Solomon speaks are well off (if they can't find a suitable place for their children to be treated they start one) and I sometimes fear he may be preaching to the choir. Nonetheless, this is a marvelous book and it's wonderfully written. It deserves the widest possible audience.

A Moving And Informative Book On Raising Children Different From Ourselves
By Jack
How do we raise children who are profoundly different than we are?
This is the question posed by award-winning writer Andrew Solomon in "Far From The Tree." How do parents deal with raising a child who isn't what they expected him or her to be? What if the child is autistic? Deaf? Has Down Syndrome? And how much does nurture have to do with the people our children become? Or is it more due to nature?

Solomon began writing this book twelve years ago, after attending a protest of deaf students who opened his eyes to seeing people with `differences' as not having disabilities, but having their own unique gifts. He follows the lives of many families who are faced with the challenge of raising children who are profoundly different than they expected them to be. Each of these stories reveals in their own way the nature of humanity, the unconditional love of parents for their children, and the desire for all humans to be valued as individuals.

Solomon also shines a spotlight on his own upbringing. The gay son of heterosexual parents, who was also dyslexic and bullied for not conforming to the stereotypical expectations of what a typical male should be, Solomon reveals how he overcame his insecurities to not only accept himself, but to decide to become a father.

Review

From the book reviews:

“This text can serve as a complement to traditional undergraduate programming language course resources or as the main textbook for introductory courses in programming language operational semantics. The book is well organized, flows well, and is pleasant to read. … Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and faculty.” (D. Papamichail, Choice, Vol. 52 (5), January, 2015)

“There are many things in this book that would lead to its recommendation as a course textbook: it provides a good breadth of material, and a stepping stone from programming experience to more theoretical aspects of programming languages. … it would be an excellent addition to a reference list that could be used to inform a solid understanding of programming language theory.” (Sara Kalvala, Computing Reviews, July, 2014)

From the Back Cover

Providing a concise introduction to the essential concepts in programming languages, using techniques from operational semantics, this book highlights three major programming paradigms:

• Imperative languages: the main features of these languages are illustrated with examples in Java, Python, C;

• Functional languages: modern languages such as ML and Haskell are used to describe the functional style of programming;

• Logic languages: the last part of the book gives an overview of logic programming using Prolog.

Following a general description of each family of languages, their semantics are studied using abstract machines and structural operational semantics. Programming Languages and Operational Semantics gives an in-depth analysis of the basic concepts in programming languages instead of a mere survey of languages, assisting the understanding of the fundamental notions in programming languages over simply describing their properties.

It is addressed to undergraduate students, as a complement to programming courses.

Hunks, Hotties, and Pretty Boys: Twentieth-Century Representations of Male Beauty, by Steven L. Davis and Maglina Lubovich

White, heterosexual, middle-class men have long served as the standard for masculine beauty, even if such men have refused to embrace this term. This study seeks to denaturalize this standard by exploring the connections between beauty and the broad spectrum of masculinities. The chapters included in Hunks, Hotties, and Pretty Boys contribute primarily to the field of gender studies, specifically masculinity studies. They consider twentieth-century representations of male beauty through a variety of mediums: performance, literature, art, photography, film and television. Although the contributors hail from both the humanities and the social sciences, all share a concern for how beauty informs, shapes, defines, and re-defines our understanding of masculinity itself. These scholars investigate a range of historical periods and draw from a broad scope of critical approaches. Some interrogate male beauty through the female gaze and look to the influence of female performance on notions of masculine beauty. Others examine how queer and racial constructions of male beauty refuse and offer alternatives to hegemonic models of identity. Another revisits previous philosophical and theoretical conceptions of beauty, only to deconstruct gendered conceptions of the beautiful and the sublime. In all, these essays complicate masculine beauty by examining Chicano, Asian, working class, and female constructions of male beauty in Western culture.

Review
"This eclectic anthology brings much-needed attention to the social construction of male beauty. Its novel and wide-ranging essays will be of interest to scholars of gender studies, visual culture and gay and lesbian studies." -Martin Berger, Professor of History of Art and Visual Culture at the University of California at Santa Cruz, author of Man Made: Thomas Eakins and the Construction of Gilded Age Manhood (2000) "While the impact of the myths and ideals of beauty on the lives of women has attracted prolific scholarship, men's association with the discourses, representations and practices of beauty has gone relatively unexplored. Davis and Lubovich address this critical omission in an anthology that dexterously reveals the connections between beauty and the multifaceted field of masculine identities and cultures. Always perceptive and absorbing, the essays deal with a wonderfully rich range of topics. Together, they provide an invaluable insight into the way notions of 'beauty' influence and inform patriarchal culture and definitions of masculinity." -Bill Osgerby, Professor of Media, Culture, and Communications at London Metropolitan University, author of Playboys and Paradise: Masculinity, Youth and Leisure-Style in Modern America (2001)

The Jeweler Who Did Not Flinch
By Billyjack D'Urberville
Included in this collection is the best single 5 pages, perhaps, in century 20 American fiction, a short-short story called "Graven Image." It is worth the price of the book, and anyone coming to O'Hara is advised to begin his encounter here.

O'Hara was much maligned and misunderstood in his lifetime, and remains so. Irish but Protestant, chain-smoking, rancourous but wise, it is now becoming clear what a giant he was. Everybody mocked O'Hara, mistaking his oft-tawdry subject matter for himself, a process at times he seemed to mischieviously collaborate in. Everywhere, that is, except on paper. They are all long dead now so it no longer matters, only the paper survives. He was perhaps equal to any century 20 American short fiction writer, a very high compliment when Faulkner, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Cheever, Capote, Updike, Carolyn Gordon et al are in the running.

Well, fellow Americans, stand up for this determined upsetter of convention. Read him and weep. While a lot of his coevals ran off to Paris, Africa or wherever, O'Hara stayed at home and minutely recorded a massive and awful transformation of his beloved nation -- chiefly chronicling the breakdown in the institution of marriage and the spread of Gilded Age pretense into ordinary folks everywhere, with spreading affluence and free time galore. It is painful stuff for each and every one of us too, delivered without comment or overt moralizing. Son of a small town doctor, he wielded a cold pen the way his pa used a scalpel. No wonder everybody hated him -- but the result is a body of work meticulously recording the massive social changes in the USA with the precision of glacier-cut striations on granite.

"There it is now gentleman, you can take your hats off now," John Peale Bishop said upon the death of Scott Fitzgerald. The comment is more appropriate to O'Hara, who as time passes will certainly cement his place firmly on the short list of major century 20 American writers.

Great for GIS users switching from ArcGIS
By Adam A
I have been using ArcGIS for the last 3 years and recently took a job at a non-profit. Being that we are less funded, I looked into QGIS and this manual has been pretty useful figuring out the essential functions of QGIS. Probably wouldn't recommend to someone with absolutely no GIS knowledge, but for what it's worth, this is pretty useful book to have on my kindle.

I finally found the QGis hand-book I was looking for! :)
By federica.manenti
I recently had the occasion to review this book, task to which I volunteered with pleasure since it finally gave me the right occasion and some organized basical instructions I was looking for to move on and learn how Qgis works. In general the book is able to give a rich overview on the possible uses of the software, from the basic ones (such as simple visualization of geodata, both vector and raster) to the more elaborated ones (such as different spatial analyses).

I found it particularly interesting for the rapid introduction to the software integration with databases (such as SQLITE and POSTGIS) and with web services data providers (WMS, WCS or WFS), while I mostly appreciated the Spatial Analysis chapter: it is full of tutorials (the book also gives you indications about where to find fitting data for the exercises) and shows how to apply some of the most used tools, both for vector and raster data. Not all the Qgis tools are explained: the reader is expected to be given the basis to find how to use also the not explained ones, and I think this is correct in a “learning” perspective.
Anyway, I would have appreciated a lot some more tutorials with Python console: I found only one small case... Consider it as a personal suggestion for eventual future editions! ;)

In my opinion, it is currently the best guide for GIS users who want to discover Qgis: it is clear to the reader, from the first page to the last one, that this book was not written by “improvised auto-elected experts”, but from a person who lived the Qgis project from the inside, saw it grow and contributed actively to spread it. Thanks for that.

This is the book to buy if you don't know diddly squat about GIS
By John J. Lapham
This is the book to buy if you don't know diddly squat about GIS. With a little patience in maybe less than an hour you'll be staring at a multi-layered map which you have made following the clear instructions in the book. This may not be the best book for seasoned veterans but for someone who needs to learn the very basics quickly this is the one to buy and read. More screen shots than words, more clear examples than wordy explanations make this the book for the GIS newbie.

Good but short book
By Jamie Rhodes
This is a short novella that focuses on Brock and Jean from the Fairfield series. Reading the other books are not necessary, but they are very good books. Brock is Laurie's father. After finding out that he has a daughter, he moves to town to begin a relationship with her. Jean is an older friend of Laurie's from the elementary school where she teaches. Sparks fly when Jean and Brock meet. There is a bit of suspense as an arsonist is on the prowl. Dual point of view. No cliffhanger.

Good Epilogue to the Fairfield Series
By Kindle Customer Charlene
It had been awhile since I'd read the three books in the Fairfield series, but this was an enjoyable short read, that while it could be a standalone, is much more enjoyable having read the previous books in the series. It has inspired me to back and re-read the others.

Finally
By Kris H.
I'm so glad to be able to finally get to read about Brock and Jean. Now we just need one more that's in the future where the couple's have children and maybe even Brock and Jean. Ohhhhhh, that would be a great ending to a wonderful series.
