Grade 3-6–Tang's seventh entry in a series that includes The Grapes of Math (2001) and Math-terpieces (2003, both Scholastic) is another winner. Each spread includes a poem consisting of neatly rhymed couplets that first set a scene (I gaze into the evening sky,/Think great thoughts and wonder why) and concludes with a hint or suggestion as to how the objects on the opposing page might most efficiently be grouped to arrive at a sum (When you look up to the heavens,/Try to think in groups of sevens!). There are no overt patterns so that, as Tang says in his author's note, children are challenged to combine numbers in smart ways, not just obvious ways. The book concludes with clear diagrams and succinct explanations providing the solutions. Briggs's computer-generated art is crisp, clear, and delightfully quirky. For example, Sock Hop features a loafer on guitar, work boots on drums, and a high-heeled pump on keyboard. As an expert educational diagnostician, Dr. Umar works with Intellectually Disabled, Autistic, Emotionally Disturbed, and Learning Disabled children and their families. Remember that we Africans believe that children belong to the village/community and we all have to be proactive in their upbringing. Very Much Needed.

I enjoyed this book greatly. Dr. Johnson is very detailed and specific in this book.Dr. Johnson also outlines and defines the problems that special education has caused on financial and a mental scale. This book also tackles ADHD in a way that is long overdue. This book is a must have for parents.

In this patriarchal dominated society there is a strategic attack against the development of the black male this attack begins in earnest when black males enter school the special education designation is the prime weapon of choice the author Dr. Umar Johnson is an expert in dealing with this ongoing battle. A good place to start is the whole of chapter 6 THE REBIRTH OF RACIAL SCIENCE: MILD RETARDATION AS AFRICAN INFERIORITY DTSORDER on pages 29-33 after that you can turn to chapter 9 LEGALIZING SEPERATE & UNEQUAL: WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT SPECIAL EDUCATION? ON PAGE 47 "ONE MIGHT EXPRESS RESERVATION AT HEARING THE UNCOMFORTABLE FACT THAT SCHOOLS, THEIR CONTRACTORS, AND THEIR EMPLOYEES ARE CASHING IN ON THE FAILURE OF BLACK CHILDREN. HOWEVER, THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT IS HAPPENING ALL ACROSS AMERICA, IN BOTH CHARTER AND PUBLIC SCHOOLS ALIKE. SPECIAL EDUCATION IS A BUSINESS, MUCH MORE THAN IT IS A PROGRAM. IT IS THE BUSINESS OF MAKING MONEY OFF OF MIS-EDUCATED BLACK BOYS.AS A SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST, I CAN REMEMBER UNCOUNTABLE WARS I'VE HAD WITH EDUCATORS, PRINCIPALS AND ADMINISTRATORS WHO SOUGHT TO SPECIAL EDUCATE BLACK BOYS FOR SO-CALLED LEARNING PROBLEMS, WHEN THE REAL ISSUE AT HAND WAS THE FACT THAT MOST OF THE STUDENTS IN QUESTION HAD, IN FACT, NEVER BEEN TAUGHT THE ACADEMIC SKILLS IN THE FIRST PLACE" also on page 47 "EVERY TIME A CHILD IS EVALUATED, DIAGNOSED WITH A LEARNING DISABILITY, AND "SENTENCED" TO A LIFE OF SPECIAL EDUCATION, THE SCHOOL RECEIVES SEVERAL THOUSAND EXTRA DOLLARS IN EDUCATIONAL SUBSIDY." This entire book should be bought and read by every black parent of school aged male children, we black people have to use every tool at our disposal to fight against this insidious assault upon our black boys, if you want to reach the author of this book DR. Why we still have safety issues with lithium batteries?

After 50 years of Lithium Battery Technology usage in research and development programs, and significant commercialization, we still continue to have safety incidents as the technology evolves and is used in new applications. This book was printed in1994. Today, April 16, 2013, I write the "first" review. Why we still have safety issues with lithium batteries? Sadly we do not learn and share our knowledge. I am including myself in this assessment. I could have referenced this book in a paper I wrote back in 2007. I made a mistake, which I hope I can start to correct post the GM Volt and Boeing 787 fires.

This book is a "must" for all serious professionals in the power sources community at government labs, battery manufacturers, research institutes, universities, systems integrators, etc. We can prevent the next safety incident by understanding the valve this reference book provides. It should have been a reference on the NTSB site not the wikipedia version of lithium-ion batteries.

Great third book!!!

Great third book! I admit I only glanced at the beginning of the second book and never finished it because it didn't grab my attention like the first book. This one is reminiscent of the first book, in a good way. Gypsy's character development was believable and surprisingly sophisticated yet easy enough for the target audience (middle school readers) to understand. I also appreciated all of the secondary characters - I felt connected to all of them, even the ones who only make a brief appearance. It is impressive that the author is able to create such great characters and develop the relationships so deeply in a relatively short book. I took off one star only because it was a bit predictable and certain parts seemed a little too similar to the first book, but otherwise a fun read!

Good book for young readers

Another great book for students to enjoy. It makes me just a little sad that I am no longer a school librarian so I could present this book to my kids. I know they would love it. This is the kind of book that helps to create life long readers. The story is interesting and a bit unusual. I enjoyed reading it and will do my best to share it with some young readers. I liked the magic aspects of the book very much. This book absolutely belongs in a school library and the children's section of public libraries. It is really good.

A long time ago I read the beginning of this trilogy, Savvy and Scumble. I was happy to see that there was another one, even though it had been quite a few years in-between. In that time, I felt I had grown out of the age appropriate level for this book, but I could not help reading it, because I remembered how much I liked Savvy. Gypsy has an unusual family, where everybody gets a savvy, a special power, on their thirteenth birthday. But what Gypsy got is not what she had hoped for, and as things get even worse, such as having her grumpy grandma move in with them, things end up switched. As everything that happens starts developing in uncharted territories, even Gypsy's parents cannot help. I found this book to be a sweet coming of age story, it is definitely for someone younger then me. One thing that I did not like about this book was how stressful it was to read. It was one of those books where the characters spend the whole time trying to prevent something, which can be very stressful and frustrating for the reader. Overall, I give this book four stars because it book is good, it just is not great.

Yes, a fridge. People sometimes do the craziest things when they've had too many beers. Hawks, known throughout Great Britain for his humor and appearances on various radio and television shows, made a drunken bet with a friend that he could successfully hitchhike around Ireland with a refrigerator as his traveling companion. Once sober, he realized the magnitude of the task he'd set himself but agreed to honor the bet anyway. The result is a hysterically funny travelog, in which Hawks shares his warm regard for the Irish, his amusing contacts with the natives, anecdotes from places he stayed, and brief tales about those who gave him rides. Anyone who enjoys Bill Bryson or Dave Barry will greatly appreciate Hawks for a writing style that seems to be a stew made of one part Monty Python, one part Benny Hill, and two parts Barry. Highly recommended for public libraries and academic libraries with browsing collections.

A light, entertaining read...

This book doesn't claim to be anything but what it is: a rollicking good time. Hawks has detailed his misadventures with a fridge whilst traipsing around the Green Isle. It makes for a fun time, it really does.
The premise is so absurd it has to be real: the author makes a bet with a mate in the midst of a party... that he attempt to take a fridge all the way around the country of Ireland - and do it in 30 days or less. Hawks, not being of right mind, agrees. Then he gets sober and realizes the enormity of this �100 bet. The first hilarious mis-step in the adventure is that the fridge he bought for the trek cost him roughly what the bet was for.
From there things get better (or worse, if you're Hawks) and a great time begins. The book doesn't just reflect Hawks' strange experiences whilst hitching with a compact fridge - it also shows the generous and good-natured heart of the Irish.
I bought this book for my trans-atlantic flight home and it keep me fully entertained for the entire 8 hours. This isn't a challenging read, but it's darn good fun all the same. I give it a recommend.

Funny and light -- a great summer read

I had no idea what a "laugh out loud" book this would be! Imagine, taking someone up on a bet to hitchhike around Ireland with a dorm-sized fridge, then writing a book about your exploits of fulfilling the terms of the bet. Tony Hawks did it, and here we have the fruits of his efforts.
From the beginning, he admits that it's a frivolous idea....but I think that's what makes it that much more interesting. In 30 days, Tony works his way around the perimeter of Ireland with the fridge on a dolly. We get to read of his encounters with various Irish, English and Americans who help him reach his goal. We see how the fridge becomes more of a celebrity than Tony (an ego-reducing reality!) and how people banded together behind this crazy idea.
I have traveled extensively in Ireland, and while some of the incidents and reactions may seem a bit over the top or overly charitable, I can believe that they happened. I haven't read a travelogue that more fully captures the true heart, spirit and imagination of Ireland better than this.
Bravo to Tony for completing the task...and for letting us accompany him on his journey.

Drunken "walk in the woods"

I picked up this book on a trip to London based soley on its cover, putting down a copy of another travel book by Bill Bryson. It seemed kind of dumb, but potentially funny. I was very pleased to find that this book was well-written with sharp humour, insight, and rich descriptions of the author's travels around Ireland with a small dormitory-style refrigerator. It did turn out to be quite a stupid idea, but that's what makes the book an enjoyable read; there's really nowhere to go but up from that point. The fridge goes surfing, gets blessed by a nun, and travels with a horse while Tony makes numerous friends along the way.
If you like the British flair in the novels of Nick Horby and Helen Fielding and enjoy travel writing, you should enjoy this book as well.

I didn't get much out of the book

I had hoped to use this in my business correspondences. I like the concept, but the book itself was extremely hard to get through. All of the personal stories (used as examples) and questionaires to fill out and then add up the scores got tiresome and in the end I really didn't learn how to read other people's personalities so much as I can tell you in detail about my own personality now.

Easy and funny read and much easier to understand than Myers-Briggs!

This is truly my absolute most favorite book. I can't begin to tell you how many times I've read it myself or gifted it to friends. It is written in a lighthearted and entertaining way that makes it enjoyable to read at night before going to bed. Mrs. Littauer divides the personalities into 4 groups and has a fantastic way of communicating their traits, strengths, and weaknesses. It basically delivers the same message as the Myers-Briggs but without all the complicated E, S, T, I, etc. It provides wonderful insight into your own personality traits and is wonderful at helping you see how and why other people do what they do and say what they say. For example, I am a strong 'melancholy' personality type and like to have things right and in order (even if it's my own sense of order). I literally laughed out loud when she gave an example of her husband, also a melancholy, instructing her on how to put the toilet paper on correctly. She didn't know it could be incorrect. I do the exact same thing, even in public places or other people's homes. I figure if they don't notice it's not on incorrectly, then they won't notice or care that I've corrected it. Hysterical. Also have a friend who can come across as a bit brusk or aggressive. This booked helped both of us see that her desire to get things accomplished can sometimes come across wrong. It's great it helping you tailor your message to the personality type of the recipient. You'll find yourself 'personality typing' all of your friends, etc. It helps explain a lot of the communication problems between people. This book is truly absolutely fantastic! Also, highly recommend 5 Love Languages to go along with it.

This is one of those books that are required reading to understand why you are the way you are, and how you affect the people around you. A very small investment in money for huge returns in social skills.
