Great third book!!!

Great third book! I admit I only glanced at the beginning of the second book and never finished it because it didn't grab my attention like the first book. This one is reminiscent of the first book, in a good way. Gypsy's character development was believable and surprisingly sophisticated yet easy enough for the target audience (middle school readers) to understand. I also appreciated all of the secondary characters - I felt connected to all of them, even the ones who only make a brief appearance. It is impressive that the author is able to create such great characters and develop the relationships so deeply in a relatively short book. I took off one star only because it was a bit predictable and certain parts seemed a little too similar to the first book, but otherwise a fun read!

Good book for young readers

Another great book for students to enjoy. It makes me just a little sad that I am no longer a school librarian so I could present this book to my kids. I know they would love it. This is the kind of book that helps to create life long readers. The story is interesting and a bit unusual. I enjoyed reading it and will do my best to share it with some young readers. I liked the magic aspects of the book very much. This book absolutely belongs in a school library and the children's section of public libraries. It is really good.

A long time ago I read the beginning of this trilogy, Savvy and Scumble. I was happy to see that there was another one, even though it had been quite a few years in-between. In that time, I felt I had grown out of the age appropriate level for this book, but I could not help reading it, because I remembered how much I liked Savvy. Gypsy has an unusual family, where everybody gets a savvy, a special power, on their thirteenth birthday. But what Gypsy got is not what she had hoped for, and as things get even worse, such as having her grumpy grandma move in with them, things end up switched. As everything that happens starts developing in uncharted territories, even Gypsy's parents cannot help. I found this book to be a sweet coming of age story, it is definitely for someone younger then me. One thing that I did not like about this book was how stressful it was to read. It was one of those books where the characters spend the whole time trying to prevent something, which can be very stressful and frustrating for the reader. Overall, I give this book four stars because it book is good, it just is not great.

Yes, a fridge. People sometimes do the craziest things when they've had too many beers. Hawks, known throughout Great Britain for his humor and appearances on various radio and television shows, made a drunken bet with a friend that he could successfully hitchhike around Ireland with a refrigerator as his traveling companion. Once sober, he realized the magnitude of the task he'd set himself but agreed to honor the bet anyway. The result is a hysterically funny travelog, in which Hawks shares his warm regard for the Irish, his amusing contacts with the natives, anecdotes from places he stayed, and brief tales about those who gave him rides. Anyone who enjoys Bill Bryson or Dave Barry will greatly appreciate Hawks for a writing style that seems to be a stew made of one part Monty Python, one part Benny Hill, and two parts Barry. Highly recommended for public libraries and academic libraries with browsing collections.

A light, entertaining read...

This book doesn't claim to be anything but what it is: a rollicking good time. Hawks has detailed his misadventures with a fridge whilst traipsing around the Green Isle. It makes for a fun time, it really does.
The premise is so absurd it has to be real: the author makes a bet with a mate in the midst of a party... that he attempt to take a fridge all the way around the country of Ireland - and do it in 30 days or less. Hawks, not being of right mind, agrees. Then he gets sober and realizes the enormity of this �100 bet. The first hilarious mis-step in the adventure is that the fridge he bought for the trek cost him roughly what the bet was for.
From there things get better (or worse, if you're Hawks) and a great time begins. The book doesn't just reflect Hawks' strange experiences whilst hitching with a compact fridge - it also shows the generous and good-natured heart of the Irish.
I bought this book for my trans-atlantic flight home and it keep me fully entertained for the entire 8 hours. This isn't a challenging read, but it's darn good fun all the same. I give it a recommend.

Funny and light -- a great summer read

I had no idea what a "laugh out loud" book this would be! Imagine, taking someone up on a bet to hitchhike around Ireland with a dorm-sized fridge, then writing a book about your exploits of fulfilling the terms of the bet. Tony Hawks did it, and here we have the fruits of his efforts.
From the beginning, he admits that it's a frivolous idea....but I think that's what makes it that much more interesting. In 30 days, Tony works his way around the perimeter of Ireland with the fridge on a dolly. We get to read of his encounters with various Irish, English and Americans who help him reach his goal. We see how the fridge becomes more of a celebrity than Tony (an ego-reducing reality!) and how people banded together behind this crazy idea.
I have traveled extensively in Ireland, and while some of the incidents and reactions may seem a bit over the top or overly charitable, I can believe that they happened. I haven't read a travelogue that more fully captures the true heart, spirit and imagination of Ireland better than this.
Bravo to Tony for completing the task...and for letting us accompany him on his journey.

Drunken "walk in the woods"

I picked up this book on a trip to London based soley on its cover, putting down a copy of another travel book by Bill Bryson. It seemed kind of dumb, but potentially funny. I was very pleased to find that this book was well-written with sharp humour, insight, and rich descriptions of the author's travels around Ireland with a small dormitory-style refrigerator. It did turn out to be quite a stupid idea, but that's what makes the book an enjoyable read; there's really nowhere to go but up from that point. The fridge goes surfing, gets blessed by a nun, and travels with a horse while Tony makes numerous friends along the way.
If you like the British flair in the novels of Nick Horby and Helen Fielding and enjoy travel writing, you should enjoy this book as well.

I didn't get much out of the book

I had hoped to use this in my business correspondences. I like the concept, but the book itself was extremely hard to get through. All of the personal stories (used as examples) and questionaires to fill out and then add up the scores got tiresome and in the end I really didn't learn how to read other people's personalities so much as I can tell you in detail about my own personality now.

Easy and funny read and much easier to understand than Myers-Briggs!

This is truly my absolute most favorite book. I can't begin to tell you how many times I've read it myself or gifted it to friends. It is written in a lighthearted and entertaining way that makes it enjoyable to read at night before going to bed. Mrs. Littauer divides the personalities into 4 groups and has a fantastic way of communicating their traits, strengths, and weaknesses. It basically delivers the same message as the Myers-Briggs but without all the complicated E, S, T, I, etc. It provides wonderful insight into your own personality traits and is wonderful at helping you see how and why other people do what they do and say what they say. For example, I am a strong 'melancholy' personality type and like to have things right and in order (even if it's my own sense of order). Today these large firms are gobbling up good dentists and their practices and now selling good dentistry cheaply; still fueled by advertising budgets you can’t compete against. So what is the independent dentist to do? Get this book!!! It’s filled with gold for the dentist who wants to hold on to the freedom their practice has afforded them; the dentist who wants the practice that supports their lifestyle rather than having a job. Great book on advanced concepts of dental practice marketing! First, Dr McAnally states the problems and agitates the pain that all dentists have, trying to differentiate themselves from other dentists. Then, with his hierarchy pyramid of marketing, he addresses every level, and gives great advice for every level of marketing. His advice, especially at the higher levels of the pyramid is worth many multiples of the price of the book.
This is a must read for any dental professional who is looking to differentiate himself and created the Category Killer Practice that Dr. Mac talks about!

The book's eight chapters blend topics that I have studied and taught over two decades in the classroom and practiced in motivational-leadership consulting. Each chapter invites readers to learn theoretical concepts and encourages them to apply this knowledge to their day-to-day lives. My goal is to show readers how to master self-motivation. The book thus seeks to mediate market-driven dreams and scholarly research.

Improving Self-Motivation

Although this is a small book, it is powerful in that Dr. Provitera has capsulized for the reader important information available in the field of self-motivation. He provides 28 pages of Endnotes of other authors who have analyzed and summarized systems for personal success. This book would particularly benefit young adults, students of institutions of higher learning or those who have been in the work force for several years and desire to improve their occupational or vocational status. In addition, Dr. Provitera provides a workbook at no extra charge to go with his manual, which he believes will help the reader understand his concepts more fully. He also invites readers to contact him regarding three questions he poses at the end of Chapter Eight. Perusing his website [....] provides more fully his background and most of the media tools available for self-promotion.

This reviewer heard CEOs speak the other day on Book Events and with such a lack of jobs available for new and even old employees, the main asset they look for in new employees, and especially degreed ones, is the ability to jump beyond the job requirements and improve it based on their own initiative. In other words, how can an employee make the job more efficient in the same amount of hours for the same cost? This manual helps an employee understand how to meet such standards. I recommend this book especially for individuals who are seeking new insights in the areas that are covered.

From the text: Why is it important to study tourism? The immediate and obvious answer to this question is that it is a global activity of major proportions and of huge economic significance. Tourism is worth studying for reasons other than its size and economic significance. The temporary displacement of millions of people worldwide has social, cultural, and political consequences that should not be ignored. This will involve consideration of humanistic or interpretive understanding of tourism, as well as positivist, statistical and empirical approaches to the subject. The study of tourism, especially in its international form, also directs our attention to major processes such as globalization and transnationalism. We can also assert with some confidence that, through an examination of tourism, we can learn a good deal about ourselves and the times in which we live.
The scholarly literature on tourism has increased enormously during the past five decades, as tourism itself has become a global phenomenon of staggering proportions. The vast majority of books and journal articles on the subject are aimed at fellow academics, university graduate students, policymakers, or persons engaged in tourism management. Much of this work could be labeled tourism without tourists, for in it we seldom encounter a real live tourist, and the concepts and theories presented are often quite abstract and divorced from our own travel experiences. This, together with the use of a rarified language and unfamiliar terminology (or familiar terminology that turns out to mean something different than we imagined) can make for some difficult reading. Finding a navigable route through the extensive body of tourism research studies, commentaries, interpretations, and theoretical contributions can be a daunting task for beginning students and others confronting the subject for the first time. This book is written with these readers uppermost in mind. It does not attempt to break new theoretical ground, but has the more modest aim of offering a basic and necessarily selective guide to academic studies of tourism and the main problems and issues these deal with. It does not pretend to offer a comprehensive review of the field, for such a task would obviously require several lengthy volumes.
Each chapter ends with a list of Review Questions that are meant as an aid to understanding the main points and arguments. Also included is a list of Discussion Topics suitable for small group or seminar sessions. There are also questions designed to help the reader to connect personally with the chapter contents, which can be helpful in deepening the reader's understanding of the subject.

Franklin D. Ohrtman has 20 years experience in professional networking, including high-security installations for industry and the military (U.S. Navy). A former Account Manager at Lucent Technologies, Netrix and Vsys, he is most recently the author Softswitch: Architecture for VoIP. He has a master's degree in Telecommunications Engineering from Colorado University. He lives in Denver, Colorado.

Konrad Roeder has over 20 years experience with various technologies such as Wi-Fi, GSM, Cellular, SMR, VoIP and ISDN. Konrad has a BS in Computer Science from the University of New Mexico and an MS in Computer Engineering from Florida Atlantic University. He has 3 patents issued and 3 patents pending. He currently works at T-Mobile on the 802.11 project deploying Wi-Fi in Airports and Airline Clubs. Mr. Roeder lives in Seattle, Washington.

Best book for the money about 802.11x

I purchased this book for a good in-depth overview on the 802.11x protocol. It went above and beyond my expectations. Clearly explained topics and well written chapters come together for one of the best technical books I have read to date. Excellent coverage of the RF properties of 802.11x.Covers all the areas one must consider if building a WLAN, WWAN, or WMAN. This book really opened my eyes to the potential of wi-fi and its applications, I especially appreciated the authors inclusion of various economic aspects in the book. i.e potential for profit in WISP industry, and cost/efficiency analysis of wired VS. wireless networks.

I have never wrote a review before but had to with this book. Of the 3 wi fi books I bought here, this one stood apart from the others. Especaily if you are looking to scale up from 1 or 2 user networks.
