Shelley Burgess has served as an award-winning teacher, principal, Director of Student Achievement, and Assistant Superintendent of Educational Leadership. I was lucky enough to get to pre-read this amazing book. Shelley Burgess and Beth Houf take PIRATE leadership to new depths in Lead Like a PIRATE. This book shows that courageous leaders can build the types of schools where adults are excited to work and kids are excited come to school. Beth and Shelley have taken their experiences in educational leadership and drawn a treasure map toward success for those of us who aspire to be great. This book will take you out of your comfort zone and push you toward greatness. The challenges, which are included throughout the book, will push you to become a better leader. Like the other PIRATE books before it (Teach Like A Pirate, Learn Like A Pirate, Play Like A Pirate, and Explore Like A Pirate,) I will continually go back to Lead Like a PIRATE when I need inspiration, motivation, and ideas that will make my school better. I plan on sharing this with my colleagues because everyone should "Lead Like A Pirate."

Leaders who Walk the Talk (not the plank)

The thing that I love most about this book is that I can write a review based on what I've seen in action as well as read in the book. Beth Houf doesn't just talk the talk. It's obvious by the culture in her building that she needed to be involved in the writing of this book. I had the distinct pleasure to visit her school this week. As a stranger to the rest of the middle school staff, I was welcomed with open arms, even included in the everyday celebrations of staff members, most of this without Beth being present. With days before spring break, surely the staff and students must be itching for some time off, but the signature fatigue I've come know from other buildings I've worked in or visited did not linger there. Teachers are unafraid when people walk into the rooms. What's more, the kids as well. That says more about the culture than anything else I could see or ask. However, if that isn't enough, she keeps play-dough, stress balls, and "Pirate Gear" readily available in staff workroom, which I quickly took to calling the staff PLAYroom.

You don't accomplish this feat (and yes, I'll call it a feat) without walking the walk with your staff and students daily. By reading this book, you are getting a glimpse into two of the best minds I have had the pleasure of being acquainted with in my professional career. Between the (amazingly beautiful) covers of this book, you'll find the "real" not just the "ideal." The reflection questions will have to you pausing while you still want to carry on reading. Take the opportunity to give thought to these questions as you read. You owe it to yourself and your students to do this much.

If you're reading this review to figure out if this book is for you: This book is written for classroom teachers and teacher leaders just as much as administrative leaders. Shelley and Beth may not have initially intended it this way, but as a classroom teacher, I have gained a much needed perspective as well. This book is a great resource...pirate treasure!

What I enjoy most about LEAD LAP is that both authors are experts in trial and error. They survey the land with their practical stories, victories, and struggles and invite readers to wrestle with the profession and salivate to teach children in engaging and amazing ways. But, they don't forget about the adult learners in our lives, either. "Positive piracy," as I call it, means growing your treasure chest of powerful practice along with building an incredible network of educators who want to do the same. A Mere Rehashing of Well Known Concepts

Character is Destiny covers many elements of character and personal morality. Gough provides an outstanding depiction of the differences between character and personality and their respective values, and includes many insightful reflections on life and ethics.

Gough references many philosophers to outline his chapters; each chapter being an idea or concept from past thinkers. As a result, there is little original or new content as the chapters merely summarize known ideas. Gough's ability to summarize these topics is admirable yet lacking.

Gough speaks of the difficulty Emerson had in pushing students to desire to develop good character as oppose to merely learn of it; pointing out that Emerson never offered any practical process. I found it ironic considering that Gouhh's book illustrates the importance of good character, examples of good character, benefits of good character, yet does not provide practical means of developing good character.

Gough is a talented and interesting writer, and if the book contained more originality to its content, I would rate it better. Those who are not familiar with many of the great thinkers of the past will find value in this book; however, if you are seeking the means of instilling good character or a new philosophical view, this book will not be worth your while.

What a delightful book and how simply but powerfully it gets its message across. The subject of ethics is one of the most interesting of all - and Russell Gough gets you interested in making yourself better by showing you how to build your character. The search for what makes people successful and happy all seems to come back to one thing: our characters. As he says in this book, "life rewards those who are ethical."
Here's a question for all people who claim to be ethical or who claim to operate ethical businesses: Have you ever read ONE book on the subject of ethics?! If not, begin with this book. I have placed an order for 700 copies. It will be placed on our company's 'must-read' list.
