Shelley Burgess has served as an award-winning teacher, principal, Director of Student Achievement, and Assistant Superintendent of Educational Leadership. Her highly respected work focuses on building leadership capacity through coaching, collaboration, and building�a positive culture of change which leads to dramatic improvements in teaching and learning. Beth Houf is the proud principal at Fulton Middle School in central Missouri. She is passionate about developing schools that encouraging high levels of learning and empowerment for all. In addition to her role as principal, she also serves as a facilitator for the Missouri�Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's Leadership Academy, providing monthly training to state educational leaders. Beth was named a Missouri Exemplary New Principal in 2011 and the Missouri National Distinguished Principal for 2016.�

I was lucky enough to get to pre-read this amazing book. Shelley Burgess and Beth Houf take PIRATE leadership to new depths in Lead Like a PIRATE. This book shows that courageous leaders can build the types of schools where adults are excited to work and kids are excited come to school. Beth and Shelley have taken their experiences in educational leadership and drawn a treasure map toward success for those of us who aspire to be great. This book will take you out of your comfort zone and push you toward greatness. The challenges, which are included throughout the book, will push you to become a better leader. Like the other PIRATE books before it (Teach Like A Pirate, Learn Like A Pirate, Play Like A Pirate, and Explore Like A Pirate,) I will continually go back to Lead Like a PIRATE when I need inspiration, motivation, and ideas that will make my school better. I plan on sharing this with my colleagues because everyone should "Lead Like A Pirate."

Leaders who Walk the Talk (not the plank)

The thing that I love most about this book is that I can write a review based on what I've seen in action as well as read in the book. Beth Houf doesn't just talk the talk. It's obvious by the culture in her building that she needed to be involved in the writing of this book. I had the distinct pleasure to visit her school this week. As a stranger to the rest of the middle school staff, I was welcomed with open arms, even included in the everyday celebrations of staff members, most of this without Beth being present. With days before spring break, surely the staff and students must be itching for some time off, but the signature fatigue I've come know from other buildings I've worked in or visited did not linger there. Teachers are unafraid when people walk into the rooms. What's more, the kids as well. That says more about the culture than anything else I could see or ask. However, if that isn't enough, she keeps play-dough, stress balls, and "Pirate Gear" readily available in staff workroom, which I quickly took to calling the staff PLAYroom.
You don't accomplish this feat (and yes, I'll call it a feat) without walking the walk with your staff and students daily. By reading this book, you are getting a glimpse into two of the best minds I have had the pleasure of being acquainted with in my professional career. Between the (amazingly beautiful) covers of this book, you'll find the "real" not just the "ideal." The reflection questions will have to you pausing while you still want to carry on reading. Take the opportunity to give thought to these questions as you read. You owe it to yourself and your students to do this much.
If you're reading this review to figure out if this book is for you: This book is written for classroom teachers and teacher leaders just as much as administrative leaders. Shelley and Beth may not have initially intended it this way, but as a classroom teacher, I have gained a much needed perspective as well. This book is a great resource...pirate treasure!

All Pirate Practitioners on Deck

What I enjoy most about LEAD LAP is that both authors are experts in trial and error. They survey the land with their practical stories, victories, and struggles and invite readers to wrestle with the profession and salivate to teach children in engaging and amazing ways. But, they don't forget about the adult learners in our lives, either. "Positive piracy," as I call it, means growing your treasure chest of powerful practice along with building an incredible network of educators who want to do the same. The authors leave the reader with opportunities to share which is the #1 essence of continuous learning and believing that the status quo is now becoming the minority in our classrooms. Dave Burgess Consulting, Inc. continues to tackle the profession in a positive way and make first downs all the way up the field for the ultimate touchdown that educators need to become the best that they can be for themselves and for their students.
