Dieting is for losers - but you already knew that
By dave
I've been looking for something like this for a while - this talks about good lifestyle practices, some of which i know or could have guessed (or are obvious to me), but also some nice new info to add to my knowledge. For this reason I recommend - it criticises calorie counting for what it does - makes people obsessed with food and what they eat. A recipe for disaster.
The main premise for the book: if you think you're on a diet, you're doomed to failure. You might lose a few pounds, or 5 stone as I once managed, but as soon as you think you're being deprived, unless you have a 1 in a 1000 willpower brain which is always switched on, then at best you'll become a yo-yo dieter.
The one thing I was really looking for was some real facts around this myth about 'calories-in' must be in deficit against 'calories-out' - and this mantra is even mentioned in the book as fact, but the book also (contradictorily?) talks about your metabolism speeding up by 20-30% when you eat - that's what I want to hear about - but no references as to where this info comes from. It talks about the body's metabolism slowing when you diet (everyone knows this) - but doesn't add any figures. Some people eat 5 times as many calories as others - yet they remain in good shape - clearly the body's metabolism is a massive part of this balance - how to control it is vital, and to be fair to a certain degree is discussed, in a nice style of informal writing.
If i'm nit-picking then English foods would be a lot more useful than talking about japatties or samosas (and dozens of other Indian foods) - perhaps the author could have made a more European-centric version in terms of example foods. Still, definitely great value for the money to download to my Kindle - I have a few tips in mind I'm currently working on.
