Captivating and Real

This is a very REAL narrative that takes you into the best and worst moments of her life. Amazingly, Mihalic is able to draw REAL life lessons from both types of scenarios. The stories keep you at the edge of your seat reading, but, the humor provides nice breaks in between. The life lessons in this book can be applied to anyone's situations and if you really do apply them, it's like knowing the score before the game is over. You get to learn from someone else's mistakes and triumphs in life. I have highly suggested this book as a must read to my best friends.

Something for Everyone!

I flew through Mary's book while enjoying her sense of humor, recalling similar experiences in my own life and learning at the same time.
As a teacher, I always felt that if I read a book, or attended a conference, or listened to a sermon or speech and was able to come away having learned at least one concept that I could use throughout my lifetime, my time was well spent. I believe that everyone could finish reading Mary's book and find something of value worth remembering and using in one's life experiences.
What did I learn from Mary's book? I spent a great deal of time in my teaching career trying to teach my students how to treat others with respect. The way that students treated their teachers, the lunchroom ladies, the secretaries, the para professionals, the custodians and each other was appalling. I now realize that even though I was somewhat successful in my attempt to do so, I was mostly spinning my wheels.
Mary suggests that I must teach others how I would like to be treated. SO TRUE! Had I chosen to meet with school personnel and students and explain that should they desire respect from others, they might just need to teach others how they would like to be treated themselves. As parents, we should teach our children how we would like to be treated; as teachers, we should teach children how we would like to be treated; as professionals, we should teach co-workers how we would like to be treated; and on and on.....

Entertaining stories and lessons learned

This book is an entertaining account of Mihalic's real life adventures in a variety of situations, from friendships and relationships to professional and work life. Instead of a chronological storybook account, each chapter is a short story with a specific theme and the book reads smoothly like separate TV episodes in a series.
I laughed, I cringed, and I related to the steps and missteps of the author as she struggled to become the successful and well-rounded person that she is today. I admire her ability to reveal her personal setbacks and blunders, as well as the triumphs, so that we are all reminded that success is not easy and we can learn and grow from past experiences. Overall, I was reminded that we are all human behind the facades that we put forward and it is our choice whether we learn from our past or become defeated by it.
